Dear Mr Hayburne
I write as the secretary of Wellingborough & District Nene Angling Club I am both dismayed and alarmed at the Council’s proposal to consider re-instating Kangaroo Spinney to the local travelling community. It is fair to say that I speak for our chairman the committee and our substantial membership.

As owners of the land adjacent to the area known as Kangaroo Spinney we have invested a great deal of time and money in restoring the property to a pleasant and safe environment for our members to fish. We have erected fences, put down a hard road for vehicles cleared out a huge amount of rubbish and filth including a mountain of old tyres and other unmentionable items. All of which had to be disposed of safely and legally, and all this from our own precious resources, both in terms of volunteer manpower and hard cash.

Even though we have held the fishing rights for the river Nene by Kangaroo Spinney for 140 years we were unable to fish the river during its previous occupancy for fear of intimidation, theft from or of vehicles, we even had members robbed of their fishing tackle in broad daylight, and the police did nothing, in fact it was declared as a ‘no go’ area.
To even consider returning it to its former life would show a great disservice to our members many of which can now enjoy the facility we are calling Spinney Lakes in safety and comfort for the first time.

Our club is proud of its heritage, it is probably one of the oldest continuing institutions in the town, and it continues to provide a much loved leisure and sporting facility for the people of Wellingborough, as it has done for nearly one and a half centuries.
It goes without saying that our members are of the same opinion so I implore you to reject this crazy proposal and show our club and the people of Wellingborough a deal of respect.

Yours Sincerely

Richard Blenkharn Secretary WDNAC
