MILL COTTON

FISHING COMPETITION 2nd May 2010

Susan Galloway and Leaya, young leader of the Alliance for Black Children were supported by Mark Eacock of Worcester Angling Academy and Scott in holding a fishing competition on Sunday, 2nd May 2010 for 7 children from Park Junior School at Mill Cotton Lake, Ringstead.  Parents also supported children at this event.

The competition was the icing of the cake after the children had taken part in 6 sessions over a period of 6 weeks where they learnt about the environment, fishing etiquette, fish welfare, risk assessment, health and safety around the water, use of tackle, pollution, map reading and much more.

The children fished from 10.30am to 1.30pm and caught numerous fish of various species.  The weather was wet, windy and overcast but cleared up by mid morning.

This was the children’s first fishing experience and most of the first casts caught good size fish.  At one stage I thought children would lose their fish as coaches went backwards and forwards, helping to land, bait, take photos, record fish caught and put fish in keep nets.  It really was a busy 3 hours.

The children were very excited and squeals of joy could be heard as they played the fish, learning how to use the whips.  27 pounds of fish were caught.

Children received prizes at the end of the competition and they all went away with a whip and goody bag donated by the Environmental Agency.

Prizes
Biggest Fish - Jordan
Most Fish - Sophie
Team Award - Team B
Best Behaved - Ibrahim
Best Fisherman - Thomas

The children said in their evaluations that they enjoyed the fishing, they learnt to be patient and they would like to do the activity again.

ABC Fishing Club thanks the Swanspool Ward Action Grant WBC who funded this project, Wellingborough and District Nene Angling Club for use of club waters, The EA for their donation, Worcester Angling Academy, volunteers, young leader and parents for support and especially the children for taking part.
